See Metallica Play "Master of Puppets" at Lollapalooza, Honor Eddie From 'Stranger Things'

Thrash lords paid tribute to Eddie Munson onstage during ferocious performance

Metallica headlined Lollapalooza festival last night (July 29th), and as many people likely guessed given the song's massive surge in popularity this summer, they closed their whole set with "Master of Puppets." Unless you've been living under a rock, the 1986 thrash staple has experienced a massive pop cultural resurgence since it was featured in the finale of Stranger Things season four, during which the high-school hesher protagonist Eddie Munson ripped through the track while battling the evil Vecna character.

Metallica's response to the feature has been uniformly enthusiastic, from saying they were "blown away" the first time they saw the scene to dueting with Munson on TikTok and even releasing a lyric video for "Master of Puppets" to give fans new and old a fresh visual to sing along with. Now, their connection to Stranger Things has even made its way into their live shows.

Throughout last night's performance of "Master of Puppets," clips from Munson's iconic scene popped up on the jumbotron behind Metallica and many of the graphics seemed to be inspired by the dark blue aesthetic of the show's Upside Down setting.
