Metallica's 2022 Helping Hands Concert went down last night (December 16th) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The event benefited the metal giants' All Within My Hands foundation and, after an opening performance by Greta Van Fleet, was capped by a unique two-part set by the headliners: the first, acoustic; and second, electric. The latter included the live debut of Metallica's recent surprise single, "Lux Æterna,' the NWOBHM-inflected first taste of the group's upcoming album, 72 Seasons.
The show was simulcasted on Paramount+, Pluto TV and on MTV's YouTube channel, and while clips from the official broadcast have been scrubbed from YouTube, footage of the big moment shot by lucky fans in the crowd has been popping up in their place. Watch above and below.
Metallica's performance also notably included a cool, countrified acoustic rendition of "Blackened," covers of Thin Lizzy and UFO, and a cameo by St. Vincent, who joined the band for "Nothing Else Matters." See the full set list below.
Metallica's All Within My Hands foundation works with partners around the world to combat food insecurity, provide funds in areas of natural disasters and support education with the Metallica Scholars Initiative. 100% of ticket sales and donation proceeds from the Helping Hands concert — and its accompanying auction of items and experiences that goes live December 5th — will go directly to those in need via All Within My Hands. The previous two Helping Hands Concerts in 2018 and 2020 helped to raise more than $3 million dollars collectively.
