Metallica have sat down with Zane Lowe of Apple Music 1 for a wide-ranging discussion about the past, present and future of the band. The thrash titans spoke with the popular radio DJ to reckon with their 40th anniversary, the prospect of new music, the work ethic that's gotten them here and much more.
The entire interview is being broadcasted live later this afternoon (October 6th), but right now we're premiering four exclusive clips from the sit-down that offer some insight into what's happening at Metallica HQ.
On the prospect of new music, drummer Lars Ulrich glowed about how rejuvenating it is to be out playing shows again after having to sit inside for the last 18 months, and said that he's antsy to move beyond celebrating 30 years of the "Black Album" and focus on "the future" of the band.
"Of course there's new music coming, there's always new music coming," Ulrich said. "It keeps us alive, you know that...Listen, I wish I could...I mean, of course there's new music, but there's nothing cohesive. There's not a story, there's not anything to really back it up yet."
At a later point in the interview, guitarist Kirk Hammett opened up about how having extremely high expectations for themselves is what's allowed them to accomplish what they have over the last four decades.
"I've always got the sense that we all expect so much more from ourselves," Hammett said. "Almost like an unrealistic expectation, but look where it's led. And I always say to myself, "I expect so much." And a lot of times, I fall flat by my own expectations. But at the same time, we all get results from that. And I think that's something that we all share, is we want just that much more from ourselves, from the music, and from each other."
