See Metallica's James Hetfield Reveal Recent Anxieties, Get Hug From Bandmates

Papa Het opened up about feeling like "an old guy" onstage at a show in Brazil

Metallica's 2022 Brazilian tour has featured one heart-touching moment after another. Just a few days after a woman gave birth in the venue while the band played "Enter Sandman" — and then got a congratulatory call from James Hetfield that brought her to tears — the singer-guitarist took a moment during the band's May 12th set to address some anxieties that he's recently been struggling with behind the scenes.

"I've gotta tell you I wasn't feeling very good before I came out here," Hetfield told the crowd as transcribed by Blabbermouth. "[I was] feeling a little bit insecure, like I'm an old guy, [I] can't play anymore — all this bullshit that I tell myself in my head.

"So I talked to these guys, and they helped me — as simple as that. They gave me a hug and said, 'Hey, if you're struggling on stage, we've got your back.' And I tell you, it means the world to me."

At this point, the crowd begins cheering and Hetfield's bandmates get up from their posts and come over to give him a wholesome bear hug in the middle of the stage. "And seeing you out there," said Hetfield right before they headed into the next song, "I am not alone. I am not alone, and neither are you."
