Genre-bending artist unveils buoyant title-track from new album

Between her cacophonous EAT EP, a full-force cover of Jack Off Jill's "Fear of Dying" and a grunge-pop banger of her own, Poppy has already had one helluva year — and she isn't slowing down.

Today (July 30th), the chameleonic artist has announced a brand new album called Flux that's due out in September, and she's offered up a preview in the form of its ebullient title-track.

Like her catchy June single, "Her," the entirety of Flux was produced by the pop-minded board-smith Justin Meldal-Johnsen (M83, Air, St. Vincent), who had Poppy record directly to tape in order to conjure a warmer, brighter feel compared to her metallic 2020 LP, I Disagree, and the cacophonous EAT.

In her typically cryptic fashion, Poppy hasn't shared the new album's full track list today, but it's safe to assume that "Her" will be on it. It's also reasonable to hypothesize that this new record will sound completely different than the pop-metal mayhem of her last couple releases.

The title-track she shared today is another ebullient pop-rock song that sounds like if Nineties bands like Le Tigre or The Breeders decided to add industrial elements into their songwriting. There's still eerie atmosphere and metallic textures, but the emphasis is on strong melodies and straightforward structure .

In its trippy-ass music video, Poppy wanders around a psychedelic candy land while singing the tune and eventually morphs into a full-on anime character. Watch and listen above via YouTube.

Flux is set to arrive September 24th via Sumerian Records, and you can check out the cover art below.
