See Primus Cover Peter Gabriel With Members of Tool and Mastodon

Danny Carey and Brann Dailor add extra percussion to far-out version of "Intruder"

On the surface, the summer touring package of Primus and Mastodon may appear like an odd pairing. But, looking deeper into what makes up the musical DNA of both bands, it's easy to see a lot of similarities in influences, even though both acts transform those into completely different final products.

During the tour's stop at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on July 5th, Primus paid tribute to one of their influences with a cover of Peter Gabriel's "Intruder" (from his 1980 self-titled album) — with a little help from Mastodon's Brann Dailor and surprise-guest Danny Carey of Tool on drums. The take on Gabriel's original is expectedly weird and out there, with Dailor and Carey's added percussion giving the track an intoxicating vibe. Carey has stepped up as Primus' replacement drummer back in 2014, so it's fun to see him return behind the kit in an unexpected way.
