See Sparks Fly in Serj Tankian's New "Electric Yerevan" Video

Song inspired by Armenian protests, originally meant for System of a Down

System of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian has not been spending his quarantine binge-watching Netflix. He's been as creative as ever. Last year, SOAD surprised fans with their first new songs in 15 years, "Protect the Land" and "Genocidal Humanoidz," which raised awareness and support for the band members' Armenian homeland during its war with Azerbaijan. So far in 2021, the activist musician has both served as the subject of a revealing new documentary, Truth to Power, and released a new solo EP, Elasticity, collecting five songs originally intended for System. To herald the record's arrival today (March 19th), Tankian offered up a hyperkinetic music video for closing cut "Electric Yerevan." Watch above.

"The song was inspired by the successful Electric Yerevan protests in Armenia in the summer of 2015 where people protested against proposed hikes in utility prices," Tankian commented. "My writing from that time is inscribed word for word in the song." The Garin Hovannisian-directed clip provides a visual timeline of the events leading up to the 2015 "Electric Yerevan" protests and the ensuing 2018 Velvet Revolution.
