German quartet go interstellar in surreal "Mortification of the Vulgar Sun" visual

Gorguts' 1998 LP Obscura was a landmark of technicality with hidden melody and strong songwriting permeating underneath. It's a benchmark worthy of any band, and especially those in the technical death-metal field — to play complex music without ever losing feeling or a strong sense of melody.

That's exactly the goal for Germany's Obscura, that has spent the last 15 years crafting death metal that borders on jazz with its progressive nature. Gorguts is clearly an influence, as are Cynic, latter-day Death, Atheist, Coroner and technical death metal that's melodic in sound and never nerds out on it's own virtuosity. Their long-awaited fifth effort, Diluvium, is out today (July 13th) via Relapse and features the standout cut "Mortification of the Vulgar Sun," the focus of the latest video from the quartet. Shot entirely in 4k, the clip takes the viewer across the stars into a realm where the dizzying effects and interplanetary beauty is as astonishing as the band's musical proficiency. Check it out above for the first time.
