It's no secret that Tool's Danny Carey is one of the best drummers in the game, the rightful heir to the throne left empty by Rush's late, great "Professor" Neil Peart. Carey placed high (in second place under Dave Lombardo, to be exact) in our recent "Best Metal Drummer" fan poll, and his seemingly supernatural talents are on fine display in a jaw-dropping new drum cam video released by Vic Firth. The clip, which captures Carey as he crushed Fear Inoculum standout "Pneuma," was shot last November during Tool's show in Boston, Massachusetts.
The drummer nearly burned down the studio during the recording of Fear Inoculum, and as seen in the video, his playing seems combustive enough to ignite Boston's TD Garden where Tool were headlining. When accepting the Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" earlier this year (for Fear Inoculum's "7empest"), Carey took the opportunity to hail his heroes behind the kit. "As artists, we're all influenced by the people that come before us, and for me, it's all about the great drum gods," he said. "I do my best to channel them every time I'm working — namely John Bonham, Tony Williams and, recently, my good friend Neil Peart. This is for all of you guys."
