See WAKE Face Sleep Paralysis Demon in Eerie "Kana Tevoro (Kania! Kania!)" Video

Song and visual inspired by Fijian folklore

Canadian blackened grindcore legion WAKE just released their fifth full-length, the devastating Devouring Ruin, last month. (You can pick up a physical copy via Translation Loss Records and find it digitally on Bandcamp.) One of the LP's standout cuts is "Kana Tevoro (Kania! Kania!)," a full-bore assault inspired by Fijian folk tales of demonic nightmares. Today (April 2nd), they've teamed with Revolver to unleash the music video for the song, which brings that supernatural theme to vivid life. Directed by Mitch Luna, the stark, creepy clip intercuts live footage of WAKE throwing down with shots of a fog-shrouded demon and maggot-ridden skulls. Watch above.

"In Fiji, the experience of sleep paralysis is called Kana Tevoro," WAKE vocalist-lyricist Kyle Ball explains of the song and video. "When somebody would be experiencing a sleep paralysis episode, they would consider this person possessed by a sleep demon who was eating them and a family member would sit next to the bed and repeat Kania, which means eat, to encourage the demon to eat longer and stick around long enough for the family to talk to it and find out why the demon is possessing this person. I've been dealing with sleep paralysis since I was a kid so the folklore surrounding it was really interesting to me."
