On December 21st, 2012, the metal community came together to celebrate the life and career of the late Suicide Silence frontman Mitch Lucker, who had died one month earlier in a tragic motorcycle accident. The ceremony went down the way any rockstar would've wanted it to: a blow-out concert in which 19 of Lucker's idols and contemporaries took the stage with his surviving bandmates to pay proper tribute.

The lineup was stacked with legends like Lamb of God's Randy Blythe, Mudvayne's Chad Gray, Robb Flynn of Machine Head, Sepultura's Max Cavalera and many others. Every musician did their best to honor Lucker's inimitable vocal delivery and electric stage presence, but the performance that stole the show was when Whitechapel vocalist Phil Bozeman took the mic. Of the many bands who helped define deathcore during its first wave, Whitechapel and Suicide Silence were (and arguably still are) the genre's figureheads, and their respective frontmen had a ying-yang vocal dynamic going on.

Lucker could unleash high-pitched shrieks like no other, while Bozeman's subterranean lows seemed to come from a supernatural force within him. During this performance of "Unanswered," the crushing intro track on Suicide Silence's 2007 debut, The Cleansing, Bozeman went outside of his typical range to do Lucker's demonic screams justice — while obviously nailing the song's unearthly lows. Beyond just deathcore, Bozeman is one of the most impressive vocalists in contemporary metal, and this emotional performance is one of his most compelling. Revisit it above via YouTube.
