So far, we've gotten two tastes of Slipknot's upcoming seventh album, THE END, SO FAR: 2021 single "The Chapeltown Rag" and the just-released "The Dying Song (Time to Sing)." Neither has strayed particularly far from the Knot's tried-and-true pop-metal sound. But don't let that fool you, says singer Corey Taylor. The album bears many surprises and left turns.

Speaking to Kerrang!, Taylor reiterated his comparison of THE END, SO FAR to 2004's experimental Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). He also highlighted a handful of specific, as-yet-unreleased songs, including one, track No. 4 "Yen," that he described as having "a Type O [Negative] approach." The singer, who identified the cut as one of his favorites, said it also sees Slipknot "kind of touching our inner Tom Waits in weird ways."

Taylor also spoke on opener "Adderall," which he compares to Vol. 3's "Prelude" or "Circle," as well as "the 'blues' song that Jay [Weinberg, Slipknot drummer] talks about." The singer describes that as "this drudge, proggy, stoner-rock kind of vibe, and it's actually an homage to one of my favorite bands, and I won't say who it is."

Discussing THE END, SO FAR's experimentation write large, Taylor said: "To me, Vol. 3 was really the most expansive album that we had done, up to that point. It was the thing that kind of pushed the boundaries for everybody, you know? We were able to experiment with different styles of music, and really show people that there was so much more depth to what we do. And I kind of feel like that's what this album is doing. In a way it is [also] an extension of We Are Not Your Kind, but to me, the songs are better, the structuring is better. We're able to kind of take it even further, and after 23 years professionally, being able to say that there's ground that we haven't covered yet, and there's ground that we're excited to cover, is cool."
