Surviving Soundgarden Members Want to Complete Unfinished Recordings

Guitarist Kim Thayil says band need Chris Cornell demos for work-in-progress album

At the time of his death in May 2017, Chris Cornell had been working on demos for new Soundgarden material using what guitarist Kim Thayil says were some pretty sophisticated at-home recording techniques. In a new interview with Music Radar, the six-stringer reveals that the surviving members of the band want to complete the songs, but have so far been unable to get possession of the audio files in order to finish up whatever music Cornell left behind.

"We tried to get this going two years ago," he explains when pressed on the work-in-progress Soundgarden album rumored to exist, "but we're not in possession of any of the demos that Chris was working on with them. We have copies of them, but what we need are the files, so that we'd be able to overdub and finish the record."

"We've asked nicely," he continues, "we've suggested that this will benefit all parties, if the band could just have these files, and we could finish the songs we were working on ... there seems to be some confusion amongst various parties as to what that would entail and how that works, and who that would benefit. And it's been tiring, you know. And we can't move on until some future date when someone realizes the value of allowing the creative partners to have access to the material."

Until that day comes — if it ever does — fans will have to get their fix when Soundgarden: Live From the Artist's Den drops this Friday, July 26th. The concert film was recorded in February 2013. Grab a copy here
