System of a Down's Shavo Odadjian: Hear New Project North Kingsley's Debut Song "Like That?"

Bassist goes rap-rock on single "Like That?"

Hot on the heels of fresh music from his System of a Down bandmates Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan, bassist Shavo Odadjian has launched his new project North Kingsley, a collaboration with producer Saro Paparian and lyricist-vocalist Ray Hawthorne. Today (August 7th), the trio released their debut single, "Like That?," a gritty rap-rock cut off the group's debut 3-track EP, VOL. 1, which is set to drop on August 14th and is available for pre-saved now.

"I'm known for playing metal but you can't say it's just metal — it has a lot of other influences in there," Odadjian commented. "I did Achozen with RZA and that was straight hip-hop. North Kingsley is right in the middle. The kick and the hi-hats and the snare sounds punk. To me, punk rock isn't a style of music, it's something you live. It's a lifestyle and it means going against the grain and I heard that there, and we are putting it all together to create something exciting and new for today."

North Kingsley intend to release their music across a series of three-track collections, with VOL. 2 soon to follow. They also hope to offer up songs that, like System of a Down's, resonate with meaning. "I grew up on System and had lots of albums by socially conscious bands and that spoke to me," Hawthorne said. "We are all focused and are all hard on ourselves to challenge one another and make something that's great musically and that, I hope, extends to our message."
