Tom Morello: Chris Cornell Wanted to Play More Audioslave Reunion Shows

"The last thing Chris said to me was, 'I had a great time, let’s do this again, just let me know when'"

On January 20th, 2017, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello protested Donald Trump's inauguration with an "Anti-Inaugural Ball" headlined by Prophets of Rage, his supergroup featuring members of Cypress Hill and Public Enemy. In addition to performing with Prophets (who just recently their eponymous debut album), Morello reunited with Chris Cornell, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk for Audioslave's first performance in over a decade. The band's victorious set would ultimately be its last: Cornell committed suicide on May 18th, less than four months after the historic concert.

In a new interview with the Australian music website Musicfeeds, Morello revealed that he and Cornell had floated the idea of playing additional Audioslave shows — in fact, it was the subject of their final conversation, held right after Prophets' Anti-Inaugural Ball. "Just that night, the last thing Chris said to me was, 'I had a great time, let's do this again, just let me know when,'" Morello recounted, "and we started talking about maybe doing a similar thing, where maybe it would be a Prophets of Rage show, and then we would drop an Audioslave set into the middle of it, and we'd have a ball."

Morello also confirmed the existence of unreleased Audioslave material, although the surviving members won't be cracking the vault anytime soon, ostensibly out of respect to their late bandleader. "From each of the three records, there are some really great songs that did not, for reasons that had nothing to do with quality of song, did not make the cut on those records," he said, "and I'm sure they'll come out at some point — but, you know, not right now."
