Last night (May 21st), TOOL finally returned to the stage, playing their first show since June 2022, to close out the Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona, Florida. As he hinted at during an appearance on Jackass star Steve-O's podcast, Maynard James Keenan performed wearing prosthetic breasts, a blonde wig and garish makeup, switching it up from the punk-rock-inspired look of the Fear Inoculum cycle so far. The outfit, combined with the location, made for a seemingly clear protest against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' just-signed anti-drag bill.
As for the music, TOOL delivered a stunning 10-song set featuring classic fan favorites ("Forty Six & Two," "The Pot"), newer Fear Inoculum standouts ("Pneuma," "Invincible") and choice deeper cuts ("Pushit," "The Patient") — and of course, they sounded great. In addition to Keenan's revamped look, the striking visuals also included a psychedelic laser and projections show bar none.
