Tool's Maynard James Keenan Debuts Outrageous New Stage Look at Tour Kickoff

#RiotGearRetired

On May 1st, Tool's Maynard James Keenan shared a hilarious meme via Twitter portraying himself and his bandmates as they contemplated whether to unveil new material on their then-imminent trek. The group did, of course, end up debuting not one but two new songs — "Invincible" and "Descending" — at the tour's kickoff date in Jacksonville, Florida yesterday (May 5th). What may gone overlooked amid the funny thought balloons and the snarky hashtag #whileyouwerewhiningwewereworking in the teaser post is the other hashtag Keenan included: #riotgearretired. As fans know, MJK's go-to stage attire when performing with Tool over recent years has been some badass riot gear, and as anyone who got a glimpse of him amid the shadows onstage at Welcome to Rockville knows, Keenan was dressed very differently last night. No helmet, no body armor; in their place, a massive, colorful peacock tail of a Mohawk, old-school punk-style plaid pants, and a Joker-like grimace painted on his face. Check out photos below.
