Curated by the Cure's Robert Smith, U.K. festival Meltdown 2018 is hosting an array of music's most compelling active artists, including Nine Inch Nails, Placebo, My Bloody Valentine, 65daysofstatic and Alcest from June 15-24th. Today (June 20th) the annual music and arts event featured sets from Mogwai, Mono and alt-metal trail-blazers Deftones, for whom the date was significant as it marked both the 18th anniversary of the release of their breakthrough album White Pony and the birthday of singer Chino Moreno.
Smith and his band have long been a core influence for the the Deftones, who previously paid tribute to them by covering "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" on MTV's 2004 Icon special dedicated to the Cure. Not too surprisingly, Moreno and Co. reprised that cover — which they hadn't played since 2007 — at Meltdown. They also broke out two other rarely played cuts, "Battle-Axe" and "Birthmark."
