Watch Evanescence's Stripped-Down Performance of "Wasted on You"

Amy Lee and guitarist Troy McLawhorn teamed for sparse, emotive rendition

Back in April, alt-rock stalwarts Evanescence released "Wasted on You," their first new song in three years and the lead single off The Bitter Truth, their first album of original material in nine years, which they're planning on releasing "one piece at time" across 2020. The single's DIY music video was filmed by each band member — singer-songwriter-pianist Amy Lee, guitarists Troy McLawhorn and Jen Majura, bassist Tim McCord and drummer Will Hunt — on their iPhones while in lockdown amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, the band have offered up a new quarantine take on "Wasted on You," a stripped-down performance of it by Lee and McLawhorn for Magenta Musik 360's Daheim Dabeikonzerte Series (Concerts at Home). Helmed by the former, singing and playing piano, the rendition sees the latter chipping in on vocals, adding another layer to the song.

"We were recording this music right up until we couldn't go into the studio anymore, and finished it remotely through file sharing and phone calls," Lee said at the time of "Wasted on You"'s release. "Tweaking mixes, adding background vocals, creating the video and album art all from home has been like water in the desert for me, my light in a dark time. We are still writing and have a lot more work to do on this album, but this time we wanted to release the songs individually, as we create, to live more in the moment with our fans and our music.

"'Wasted On You' wasn't the song we were planning to release first, but when the whole world went into indefinite lockdown and everything changed, so did the feeling and meaning of what we wanted to say right now. I didn't write these lyrics about what we're all now going through, but somehow that's exactly what they are."
