Watch Pantera Cover Metallica's "Seek and Destroy" With Jason Newsted in 1994

Long live Pantallica!

In the year 1994, Pantera ruled the metal world.

While they might have drafted the definitive-edition groove-metal playbook two years prior with the now-classic LP Vulgar Display of Power, it was with the arrival of their seventh studio album, Far Beyond Driven, that the Texas band secured their domination. The record earned Pantera the top slot on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum by the RIAA and netted the band its first Grammy nomination for "I'm Broken" (though the single ultimately lost the "Best Metal Performance" award to Soundgarden's "Spoonman").

Far Beyond Driven's laurels framed the victorious backdrop for Pantera's resultant trek behind the record, "Far Beyond Touring the World." On July 15th, 1994, the group loosed its fury on the feeble mortals gathered in San Jose, California. Just as the cowboys from hell approached the end of their set at Event Center Arena, a fellow rock icon took the stage: Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, who joined the band for a furious rendition of "Seek and Destroy." The cover also featured guitarist Dimebag Darrell swapping vocal duties with frontman Phil Anselmo, making for an collaboration for the ages.
