The thoughtful introspection and tones of desolate longing found in shoegaze are cross-generational themes, and modern bands like Slow Crush are expertly carrying that ennui-laden torch with an especially adept hand. Based in Manchester and Belgium, the group released their first full-length Aurora via Holy Roar Records in September 2018. Today they drop a video for the album's lead track "Glow" right here, and it does a perfect job of visually encapsulating the ethereal tones of their dreamy, weightless sound.
Filmed in distorted and filtered hues of blue and red, the clip follows a faceless protagonist on a rainy day walk. The anonymity and omnipresent listlessness of youth comes through strong, interspersed with expressionistic cuts of abstract grainy imagery. The character being followed comes to an overlook at one point and stands triumphantly, arms outstretched in a moment of blissful freedom juxtaposed by a quick jump to distorted footage of small children playing.
Eerie and contemplative, the action leaves plenty of room for viewer interpretation, only gently guiding toward a feeling of quiet introspection. These suggestions are echoed in the music itself, an obscured but lush meditation marked by intense volume and obscured lyrical delivery. "Glow" is less song and more experience, just like the on-screen happenings laid out in its visual companion.
