On July 29th, 2001, System of a Down played their monumental smash hit "Chop Suey!" for the first time ever. Two weeks before the song was officially released as the lead single from their 2001 opus, Toxicity, the band played what would become their most iconic tune to thousands of fans at the Fuji Rock festival in Niigata, Japan.

The band's performance was top-notch, but the wildest part about the showing was that it might have been the only time they ever played "Chop Suey!" without the whole crowd screaming the words back at the top of their lungs.

Instead, the entire venue was oddly quiet and relaxed as fans bopped along and tried to get a grip on the track's constantly morphing groove. It must've been an incredibly ecstatic experience to witness one of the greatest metal songs of the 21st century being played for the first time, and you can try and capture that magic by watching the performance above via YouTube.
