"You suck!" See KEANU REEVES' band DOGSTAR pelted with trash at 1992 metal festival

Playing alongside Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Deicide and more

Keanu Reeves' Nineties grunge band, Dogstar, released two albums, 1996's Our Little Visionary and 2000s' Happy Ending, and an EP, 1996's Quattro Formaggi, before going on extended hiatus in 2002. But for many metalheads, the group might be best known for their infamous appearance at 1992's Milwaukee Metalfest.

Reeves — Dogstar's bass player — looked back at the disastrous gig in a 2019 interview with GQ. "We played Milwaukee Metal Fest. Got killed," he recalled. "I think we played close to Murphy's Law. Imagine. So we played a Grateful Dead cover, at Milwaukee Metal Fest," the actor noted. GQ pointed out Dogstar not only played after Murphy's Law, Agnostic Front and the Mentors, but also before Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Deicide and "a band that was just called Cancer." Who possibly thought this would go well?

"We were like, 'They hate us. What are we doing here? What can we do? Let's do the Grateful Dead cover,'" Reeves said in the story, with a laugh. "They were just like, 'Fuck you, you suck.' I had the biggest grin on my face, man."

Reeves does indeed have a shit-eating grin on his face in video of Dogstar's performance — even as infuriated metalheads in the audience are shouting, "You suck!" and pelting the band with trash. The group gamely persevere, tearing through their punky songs, a far cry from the bruising hardcore and crushing death metal surrounding their set, and to their credit, they did win over a few converts: The camera occasionally pans over to reveal a mosh pit going amid the otherwise highly disgruntled crowd. Watch it all go down above.

Flash-forward over 30 years later, and Dogstar are making their return, prepping their first new music in two decades. Also on the comeback is the Milwaukee Metal Fest, which has been resurrected by Hatebreed's Jamey Jasta and is set to go down on Memorial Day Weekend (May 26th, 27th, and 28th) at The Rave/Eagles club in Milwaukee. Coincidence? Jasta, the ball is in your court: Book Dogstar.
