When we interviewed Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey, vocalists for Butcher Babies, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (see page 55), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts, and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn't include all of the interview. But that's what the Internet is for! Read what they have to say below!

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
HEIDI SHEPHERD Yes, I absolutely believe in supernatural and paranormal forces. I've experienced many "ghost" sightings since my freshmen year of college. I believe that the same being has followed me around since then. Eventually, I could write a book on all of the sightings and encounters that I have experienced. After developing an intense fear of the dark, I couldn't even watch scary movie trailers on TV for years. Now I embrace the fear because it brings out a whole different side of my creativity. It's odd that after years of fearing these emotions, I now live for them.
CARLA HARVEY I'm a science geek. Therefore, I think that many over-the-top supernatural events are completely made up, and others have scientific explanations like perhaps a simple exchange of energy. We've all learned in junior high science classes that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed or transferred. They say that even your thoughts have energy that can project and lead to unsettling feelings for the people around you. Your mind can also play amazing tricks on you. If you want to see something bad enough, you will. Your body comes equipped with chemicals to facilitate that. For example, I've been doing a lot of research on the release of [the chemical] DMT in your body as you are being born or when you die. DMT is a hallucinogenic that is most likely the reason people have near-death experiences or see the ghosts of their loved ones as they themselves die.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take?
SHEPHERD I believe in a supernatural force, but I don't believe that this certain force is good or evil. It just exists. If I had to classify it as one specific thing, the Devil would be mac and cheese. And I'm a believer!
HARVEY I'm an atheist, and do not believe there is a God so I don't believe in the Devil either. I believe people create their own destinies, and become their own demons and devils by making shitty choices. That guy is a great scapegoat though!

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
SHEPHERD Yes, I can describe every detail of the ghost that I first saw in college. My roommate at the time had the exact same encounter at a different time and described the ghost exactly how I had seen it. That confirmed in that moment that I wasn't 100% crazy! Since then I have had many instances where I've seen the same being. Everywhere I've lived, and every roommate I've had since then, has seen and experienced this with me. At some point it would be interesting to try and make contact with this being.
HARVEY Again, I'm not really a believer in the supernatural but I had an experience just recently on our Mayhem Festival tour where I woke up in my bunk to the feeling of my dead grandfather kneeling beside me and stroking my forehead. We had had a special bond because he was a musician, too. It wasn't like any other dream I had ever had. I could feel him there. He was expressing his excitement at my band's success and was just gushing with pride. He died shortly before our first big tour, and after he left I had a renewed sense of passion in what I was doing out there on the road. So did his spirit really visit me that day? Or was my psyche wanting so bad to share it with him that my mind created the whole thing? I'll never know for sure, but it was a beautiful experience nonetheless.

Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you're going to?
SHEPHERD I think Heaven and Hell are things that we, as humans, made up to make ourselves feel comfortable about the afterlife—something to give people a purpose and life goals. I grew up in the Mormon religion where they use the fear of a "Hell" and the Devil to persuade the members to follow and believe their teachings. They also describe "Hell" as a really shitty earth, so who knows—maybe we're already in Hell.
HARVEY I believe that Heaven and Hell are fairy tales written long ago to keep people in line and make death a little less frightening. I worked at a Catholic mortuary when I was a funeral director and embalmer, so I'm very tolerant of other people's beliefs. But honestly it would really bother me when bereaved people would say, "God wanted their angel back," or, "They are in Heaven now." I think religion and this notion of Heaven and Hell puts a lot of fear into people, really limiting their life experience. You have to live while you are here. It'd be better to read Siddhartha than the Bible.

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magick?
SHEPHERD When I was in the 7th grade, my junior high had a Halloween party with a fortune teller. Always wanting to believe that some people have that divine power to see the future, of course, I was first in line. This "fortune-teller" told me I would marry a boy named Cade. At that time I was head over heels for a kid named Cade, therefore hoping that she was really telling me my destiny and on cloud nine. Unfortunately, two years later, he tragically passed away. So obviously she was full of shit! However, I'm very interested in witchcraft and the beliefs of the craft. Learning about these things would probably open up my mind to a whole world that I've never seen before. Our minds are very powerful. To the extent that we don't even know. I do believe that some people are gifted enough to access parts of their mind that the rest of the world chooses to ignore. I would like to dive into that with an open mind and learn.
HARVEY Well, [Laughs] we toured with Huntress, does that count? I've had my fortune told a couple of times, just for fun. I'd never take it seriously.  Fortunetellers are hustlers trained to read people. We're all human and have the same emotions, needs, issues and questions about ourselves. It's not hard to figure people out and give them a little surface level advice.

What's your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
SHEPHERD Aries, a fire sign that fits my personality perfectly. I am bold-headed and move at a very fast pace. I never take no for an answer and am sometimes bitchy. But, that might be just because I'm a girl, who knows.
HARVEY My birthday is October 4 and I'm a Libra. Libras are sociable and drawn to creative endeavors. I think that suits me quite well as a musician, artist, and writer.  They also seek out balance, and tend to another's needs before their own, sometimes to their own detriment. I definitely do that.

When we interviewed Cristina Scabbia, co-vocalist of Lacuna Coil, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (See page 56), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn't include most of the interview. But that's what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below! And make sure to catch Lacuna Coil live on the Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock Tour with Sick Puppies, Eyes Set to Kill, and Cilver.

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
CRISTINA SCABBIA It depends what you mean by "supernatural." If you are talking about the energy we all have around us, yes, I definitely like to believe there is something that surrounds us. I always wondered about a lot of things about life in general, especially the unknown things. I believe it is more fun to ask question to find answers, than to believe in everything blindly.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take? If not, why not?
I do not believe in the Devil as a character, but I definitely believe that there is evil and bad vibes around. There are a lot of misconceptions about the imaginary of God and the Devil. This is such an immense topic that you guys would need at least an entire issue to talk about it in a more complete way.

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
Nope. Unfortunately I've never experienced anything like that, even if I would love to! I question if ghosts really exist—they might be weirded-out by appearing to me. I experienced something weird once though—what I saw was this round light that passed through me one night, for a second, and I felt amazing, calm and happy. I swear I was wide awake.

Do you believe in heaven and hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you're going to?
Again, I don't just blindly "believe" in anything. Let's say I "would like" to believe there is a nice place I will go when I will not be on this earth anymore. But yet again, how can I know it for sure?

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magick?
Not really, I actually think 90% of it is bullshit. There are too many swindlers around, taking advantage of people's weaknesses, preoccupations and money. There are people who developed a different type of sensitivity, sure—unfortunately all the rubbish around kind of spoils the real deal. I don't believe in curses. I did tarot readings three times in my life, just for fun and to see what was coming and the description was always so generic that it could have been valid for anyone on earth. Some believers told me that if you don't believe, the reader can't read the cards properly. Yet again, if you believe they can convince you of anything they want, right?

What's your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
I am not an expert in astrological signs so I don't really know. I am a Gemini with Sagittarius as ascendant. I hear that they are connected with creativity. If so, yeah, I think I fit!

When we interviewed Emma Anzai, bassist for Sick Puppies, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (See page 51), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn't include most of the interview. But that's what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below! And make sure to catch Sick Puppies live on the Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock Tour with Lacuna Coil, Eyes Set to Kill, and Cilver.

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
EMMA ANZAI I do believe, but that doesn't mean I'm not scared to death. I believe our soul/entity moves on once we pass, and I also believe in entities that, for whatever reason, don't move on and haunt. Unfinished business can be a crippling thing.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take? If not, why not?
I don't personify the Devil but I do believe that evil exists—just look around at all the horrific things that happen around us on earth.

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
Nope, and I don't plan on it!

Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you're going to?
I believe that Hell takes the form of coming back to earth over and over again to learn the same lessons until you finally learn. Heaven is moving on to different planes to complete your journey, whatever that may be. I have no idea which is me.

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magic?
I've had experiences with fortune telling and tea leaf reading. Yes, she foretold some spot on, weird stuff that did eventually come to fruition. Some are good readers, some not so much.

What's your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
Taurus. Yes, very much so. I'm stubborn, hard-headed and resist change. [Laughs]

When we interviewed Maria Brink, vocalist for In This Moment, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (See page 58), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn't include all of the interview. But that's what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below!

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
MARIA BRINK Absolutely! I live by this. I believe our bodies are just vessels for the spirit to live in and I also believe we can stay 100% connected to the spirit world whether or not our bodies are alive or dead. Everything is connected in the universe and we are all eternal beings.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take? If not, why not?
No, I believe in powerful entities that have extremely beautiful and loving power, and sometimes also negative power, too.

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
Yes. I lived in a building from the 1800's with my son when he was a baby, and we experienced all kinds of paranormal activities that were in a negative form. From doors slamming in my face, dogs barking at unexplainable things, to a milk carton cap levitating along with numerous other events—that eventually led me to move out and break my lease. Later I found out from the renters that a nun that had lived there for 30 years died before I moved in. I don't think she liked me being a single mom, having a child out of wedlock or whatever else her hostility may have been. It worked, I left. I didn't want to have the ending from a horror movie—I got the hint, I wasn't wanted.

Do you believe in heaven and hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you're going to?
No, but I do believe in a universal spiritual world that would probably be what most people think of as heaven. I believe in a higher being of love and good. If I had to say what I believe hell is, I think it is when a dark lost soul is stuck in its own nightmare that it created and it can't move on to the next realm. When my body dies I believe my soul will rejoin the spirit world where all possibilities, love, and lifetimes of happiness are endless.

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magick?
I live my life in a constant state of magic. I believe every moment and experience is a spell in the works, and with deep meditation and focus I believe we can create or manifest anything at anytime. Life is an evolving dream that we are in charge of at all times, we draw everything into our lives that we experience. If I choose to say I live in a magical state where all my desires become reality, then that will be my reality. This isn't just a bunch of mumbo jumbo or hippie talk, I come from a very dramatic life filled with a lot of darkness and obstacles. Statistically speaking, I should be on drugs and lost but I chose a different path. We are the creators of our own realities.

What's your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
I am a Sagittarius, which is a fire sign, and that is me through and through. Sagittarius women are free, wild, burning spirits. We are almost impossible to control or extinguish, and even trying is a waste of time. Sagittarius are always on a spiritual seeking journey and they are controlled by and live by passion, without it, our spirits will starve. I have been told by two spiritual workers that I was burned as a witch in a past life for teaching others to believe in themselves and own their inner god or goddess. This is why I was born a fire sign in this life. I have been told I have fire in my eyes. No matter what I was in my past lives, I now know that I have fire burning inside of me and I feel the never ending need to express myself through love, music, and art.

When we interviewed Lzzy Hale, vocalist for Halestorm, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (see page 60), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn't include all of the interview. But that's what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below!

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
LZZY HALE Yes, I believe in the supernatural because of songwriting. It is an otherworldly experience to have someone or something speak through you, and you, as their medium through music.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take?
As a rock 'n' roller, it's kind of standard that you believe in the Devil. But it's more about believing in your own personal devil. The question is always, is my devil's bad idea a good one—like leaving everything behind for a seemingly reckless dream? Or, is this devil's good idea a bad one—like going out drinking with the guys til 5 a.m.? And sometimes you just gotta toss a coin and say, "Fuck it!"

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
Around the world there are many venues that we've performed that are haunted with ghosts. Those that I've seen or encountered include supposed stage hands that I find out later don't really exist, children that try to trip you when finding your way to the dressing room or switch around the arrows pointing to the stage, or crazy rock spirits that like to talk through your equipment during a set.

Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you're going to?
I think that everyone's Heaven and Hell are different. I'd like to think that there's a specific Heaven and a specific Hell for musicians. In Rock 'n' Roll Heaven, you get to hang out with Ronnie James Dio while he teaches the angels to sing, or have a whiskey with Janis Joplin. But in Rock n' Roll Hell, it's just a never ending tour bus ride through the desert, where the toilet doesn't work and all you have to eat is stale chips and ketchupy, mild salsa! Ah! I hope I go to the Rock n' Roll Heaven, because I've been to that Hell!

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magick?
I've had my fortune told, my palm read, been cursed by gypsies, and been to a séance. Even though all of these experiences were able to be explained logically afterward, there's a huge part of me that believes that every turn you make, everything you touch and every person you meet gives or takes something from you that alters your future. So I can only assume that to some degree all of these experiences have brought me to where I am today.

What's your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
I'm a Libra and the zodiac symbol of the Libra are scales, which definitely fit me perfectly. My whole life and demeanor depends on balance. And I'm not just talking about wearing high heels onstage! This is very much what our song "Mz. Hyde" is about. I need to keep both sides of me in check, because if one takes over the other, everything falls apart. It's a constant struggle to let both sides coexist, but when they get along, nothing is impossible!

newyearsday2013_1.jpg

When we interviewed Ash Costello, vocalist for New Years Day, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (see page 54), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts, and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn't include all of the interview. But that's what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below!

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
ASH COSTELLO I do believe in the supernatural. I just feel that there are so many unanswered questions in this world that there is no way of knowing for sure if something magical does or does not exist. I keep an open mind when it comes to the unknown and am never truly set in my way on any one belief.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take?
I believe that the form of the Devil is not the typical red-colored demon with devil horns that most portray him as, but more as a behavioral evil in the sense of the way we treat one another. There is evil in this world and it comes from human kind—that's why I try to wake up every day with that in mind and try to add some positive magic into this world to balance out the negativity that is all around us. I'm an incredibly spiritual person. I was raised by my grandma who was a practicing Wiccan and she taught me the importance of the energy we give off, being grateful to the earth and what its provided us, crystals, herbs and their healing powers and the control our mind has over our fate. I've tried to stay in tune with that to this day.

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
I wish! I would be so excited to meet a ghost—a nice one—or witness some sort of crazy supernatural happening! To say that something extraordinary reached out and touched me and made itself known would be amazing, I think. We have a family psychic and during a session once she said my grandma, who had passed away previously, had come through to her. She knew that I hadn't been speaking to a certain person in my life and that I should reach out to them and reconnect with them. So shortly after, I took the advice and reached out and I'm glad I did. The psychic spoke of a lot of things that day that only my grandma would have known. It was an intense experience and only strengthened my trust and faith in the supernatural.

Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you're going to?
I think its very hard for me to believe for certain that there is a Heaven or Hell. No one in this world truly knows for sure. I know that  I cant say there is or isn't a Hell or Heaven. It would be silly for me to say that I know for sure what happens to us after we die. But, if we are going by the textbook idea of Heaven and Hell—then although I can be a demon at times, I know I'm an angel at heart, so I like to think I'd be headed to Heaven. Although white is not my color.

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magick?
I was raised to be extremely open-minded to every form of religion and belief, especially because my family was so eccentric. My grandma bought me the first spell books I ever had when I was in junior high and because of that I was called "witch" in school. I always felt that I knew something more magical than the other kids at school. Maybe I was meant to go to Hogwarts. The occult has always fascinated me. The idea of having some sort of control of the occurrences in your life is appealing to everyone. The idea of casting spells or putting energies into the world to help your life in a better way is a much safer feeling than the feeling of just rolling the dice and whatever life gives you then you have to deal with it. We actually have a family psychic that we have gone to for years. She is incredible and has predicted some incredibly accurate events in my life. I think if you have someone you trust and people that you are close to vouch for the persons abilities, then I truly believe in trusting psychics.

What's your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
I am very into astrology. I am a Pisces, which is actually the most hopelessly romantic of all the astrological signs. To be exact, I'm a Pisces-Aquarius cusp which means I was born right in the middle of the two signs and share traits of both. I love my sign! Pisces are incredible creatures, very in tune with our emotions, we see the beauty in the simple things and are extremely emotional. Aquarius is very driven and independent, so I feel like I've gained the best of both worlds. I don't live and breathe by the stars but whenever I've met a new guy in my life and looked up the compatibility of our two signs together—it's almost never been wrong.
