OzzfestMeetsKnotfest.jpg

It's finally here! This weekend, September 24-25, worlds will collide in San Bernadino, CA at the very first ever Ozzfest/Knotfest extravaganza. Making this event even more historical, it will be Black Sabbath's final Ozzfest appearance. In anticipation of the historical weekend, we've compiled a list of the 6 most memorable Ozzfest moments, for better or for worse.

1. Halford fronts Black Sabbath (2004)
When Ozzfest arrived at Camden, NJ during the 2004 tour, Ozzy was too sick to perform with Black Sabbath. Rather than cancel, the band tapped Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford to step in. This historical moment wasn't the first time that the legendary singer saved the day for Sabbath. After Ronnie James Dio opted not to perform with Sabbath in 1992 when they opened for Ozzy Osbourne during the last two dates of his 'No More Tears' tour, Halford stepped in.

2. Iron Maiden gets trolled (2005)
Iron Maiden's final performance at the San Bernadino, CA stop in 2005 was without a doubt one of the most bizarre moments in Ozzfest history. During the first song, people in the crowd started pelting the band with eggs, bottle caps, ice, and other garbage. Like the true professionals that they are, Maiden continued onward with their set, only to be subjected to more puzzling events. When singer Bruce Dickinson emerged with the British flag during "The Trooper," a man wearing a shirt that said "Don't F*** with Ozzy" ran on stage brandishing an American flag, eventually being shooed off by members of Maiden's camp. The madness continued for the duration of the 60-minute set where the band's P.A. system shorted out several times. When the band completed their dramatic set, Ozzy's manager/wife took the stage and told a booing crowd that Bruce Dickinson had disrespected Ozzy. The drama continued onward for days after the event with both Sharon Osbourne and Maiden's management issuing scathing statements to the press.

3. Black Sabbath Reunion (1997)
After the unprecedented success of the very first Ozzfest, the festival ramped up its appeal the following year by announcing that Black Sabbath would be reuniting with their original singer for a full tour for the very first time in nearly two decades. While original drummer Bill Ward was not on drums, Faith No More's Mike Bordin took the throne, making an exciting collaboration. The fans in the audience weren't the only ones enthralled by this event; it was reported that just about every single member of every band on the bill excitedly crowded the side stage each and every night just to watch the masters in action. Now, nearly 20 years later, Sabbath will be saying "farewell" with their final Ozzfest performance ever.

4. The passing of Drowning Pool singer Dave Williams (2002)
While on the road during the 2002 Ozzfest, Drowning Pool singer Dave Williams was tragically found dead the band's tour bus in Virginia. While there was much speculation as to the circumstances of Williams' death, an autopsy concluded that the 30-year-old singer had passed away due to complications from a heart disease known as cardiomyopathy.

5. Free Fest (2007)
In February of 2007, Ozzfest shocked and excited fans by announcing that tickets for the massive festival were going to be free of charge. Fans were able to procure tickets through festival sponsors, the Ozzfest web site and by pre-ordering a copy of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Black Rain' album. While in theory, this was an excellent idea as it didn't exclude fans who might not have had the financial means to attend Ozzfest in previous years, there were a multitude of complications. Ticket scalpers and scammers seized the opportunity to snatch up tickets and sell them to fans at exorbitant prices. In some cases, the tickets sold were fake. Additionally, despite getting funding from sponsors, there were still many monetary issues that plagued the festival. Perhaps the most damning and controversial event occurred at the Holmdel, NJ stop of the tour when a total of 83 attendees were arrested for various offenses. Tragedy also struck that particular date as two fans died at the event. This was the last time that Ozzfest toured, eventually becoming a one off festival instead.

6. Ozzfest Breaks Slipknot (1999)
Slipknot's self-titled album wasn't even released until the band's 17th performance during the 1999 Ozzfest run; however, by the time the album debuted, the nine masked maniacs from Iowa were already exploding due to their memorable and highly buzzed about performances at the festival. This was the first and last time that an unknown second stage act dominated the festival over the big guns on the main stage. Slipknot have unsurprisingly come a long way since 1999. It's unlikely that while they were crushing it as one of the lower billed bands that year, that any of the members of Slipknot could have ever predicted that they would one day graduate from the second stage at Ozzfest to producing a massive festival of their own. This weekend (September 24-25), the band's career will come full circle as Knotfest will be meeting Ozzfest in San Bernadino for a historical two-day metal extravaganza.

Eyehategod have tapped Lamb of God's Randy Blythe to fill in for Mike IX Williams on the band's forthcoming fall tour. Williams has been forced to sit out live performances due to undisclosed health issues. Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual) filled in for the Eyehategod frontman recently on two dates this summer, including the 7th Annual Gwar-B-Q.

Williams made the following statement regarding the band's decision to ask the Lamb of God vocalist to perform:

"Once again, rather than cancel an amazing tour, we have chosen for Eyehategod to continue on and give one-thousand-percent. This 2016 Discharge tour is super important to me as that band has been a huge influence on my life, but my health situation right now dictates that I am not able to take the stage and perform to the best of my abilities every single night. This is where our good friend Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God comes into the picture.

"We've known Randall since the early '90s when Eyehategod would pass through Virginia and he'd offer for us to crash at his crib after our gigs. Great times and we became great friends. To have Mr. Blythe on board as a fill in for me on vocals for this run is a true 'circle-stays-unbroken' turn of events!

"Coming off the heels of Philip Anselmo doing vocals for Eyehategod on two high profile shows [last month's performances at Southport Music Hall in New Orleans, Louisiana and the 2016 edition of Gwar BQ in Richmond, Virginia respectively], both of these men are at the top of their game. I am getting the medical help I need and will return to the band as soon as possible. Thank you, everybody…"

Blythe added:

"Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a massive Eyehategod fan. I've seen them play more times than I can remember, my old side project covered 'Dixie Whiskey' for an Eyehategod tribute album, I wear their merch, I even have a freaking Eyehategod tattoo that I got in New Orleans. They are one of my favorite bands of all time, period. I've also been friends with the guys in the band since the '90s… actually, I knew them before I knew the dudes in my own band, and Eyehategod would often crash at my crib when they came through Richmond.

"So it's a bit difficult for me to say, 'I'm super-happy that I've been asked to fill in for Mike IX Williams on this upcoming tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust.' In fact, I can't honestly say that at all because, once again as a fan and, more importantly, a friend, no one would rather see Mike do this tour more than myself. Mike IX is THE voice of Eyehategod, and I respect him as a friend, musician, and writer way too much to ever think otherwise. What I can say is that I am beyond honored to be serving a brief tour of duty on vocals with Eyehategod for this upcoming run.

"When I was asked to fill in for Mike IX due to his health issues, I immediately said, 'I'll do it, as long as all of the guys in the band are cool with it, especially Mike; it can't be any other way.' I know from talking to him that Mike is very, very bummed to not be on this tour, especially given the fact that the legendary Discharge is one of his all-time favorite bands.

"In light of that fact alone, it's a huge testament to the man's character that he's being gracious enough to let the band continue to work while he concentrates on his medical issues, which are entirely legitimate and prevent him from taking the stage night after night. The other guys need to keep the band alive while IX gets better.

"As anyone who has ever seen the band can attest, the stage of an Eyehategod show isn't exactly the ideal place to rest and recuperate from an illness, and that is the most important thing here: that Mike IX gets better. In order to both give him the time to take care of his health while simultaneously keeping Eyehategod an active working unit, I'll be proud to do my bit on this tour and take the stage with what is undeniably one of the heaviest bands on earth.

It will be a savage experience; I can promise you that. Let the down-to-earth-motherfuckin'-post-amplification-blues begin! Hail Mike IX."

In addition to Eyehategod, the tour will also feature Discharge and Toxic Holocaust. Eyehategod's first show on the run will be on October 6 in Seattle, WA and will end on October 16 in Chicago, IL. The dates are below.

10/05 Vancouver, BC @ Rickshaw Theater (no Eyehategod)

Animals_As_Leaders_JW_03-e1455130757326_1_0.jpg

Instrumental tech trio Animals As Leaders have announced the details of their fourth studio album, 'The Madness of Many,' which is set for release on November 11 via Sumerian Records.

Guitarist Tosin Abasi said "This album feels like total synergy between the three of us. None of this music would have turned out the same way without the equal inclusion of all of our musical ideas and that feel special. We're beyond thrilled with the result."

Produced by the band themselves, the album was mixed by guitar player Javier Reyes. "'The Madness of Many' is an explorative and ambitious journey of harmony, rhythm, musical expression and emotion. It has been the most collaborative effort for the band and an evolution in each of the members' musical path," Reyes explained.

"Although conceptually dense, it is the most natural sounding Animals As Leaders album yet," added Drummer Matt Garstka.

While the band has not yet released any new music, they teased the forthcoming album back in February with a brief Instagram clip of Abasi performing a new riff with the caption "Did y'all know we were writing a record?" Take a listen here.

'The Madness of Many' track list:

1. Arithmophobia
2. Ectogenesis
3. Cognitive Contortions
4. Inner Assassins
5. Private Visions of the World
6. Backpfeifengesicht
7. Transcentience
8. The Glass Bridge
9. The Brain Dance
10. Aepirophobia

Of Mice & Men appears on the cover of Revolver's October/November issue, which will hit newsstands on October 4 and is available for purchase online right now! You can view the cover below, which was photographed by Jimmy Hubbard.

Below, you can also read an excerpt from the issue's cover story, written by Dan Epstein. In this section, frontman Austin Carlile opens up about his health problems that impacted the making of the California-based metal band's latest, Cold World.

To hear the chirpy laughter that peppers his conversation, or witness the unbridled energy that he brings to his stage performances to tens of thousands of fans, you would never guess that Austin Carlile has spent his entire life suffering from Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the body's fibrous connective tissue. Because of Marfan's, Carlile has endured enormous pain in his back, hips and limbs since childhood, and has had to undergo multiple heart surgeries over the last half decade. But 2015 was even more trying than usual for the tall, heavily tattooed singer; he began the year by breaking a rib while on tour, then had to undergo surgeries for his hip, his heart, and a torn dural sac in his head that was causing fluid from his brain to leak into his spine. The fact that 'Cold World's pummeling lead single is called "Pain" is no coincidence. "We have issues with a lot of things going on, whether they're internal or external with the world, and we wanted to touch on those with this album," Carlile says.

But it's only recently that Carlile has opened up about his physical woes, however, whether in his music or in his interviews. "I spent so many years trying to deny that I actually had something wrong with me," he explains. "I was trying to act normal and be normal and be like everybody else, and it didn't work. But after all the stuff that I've been going through in this past year, I really wanted to make other people aware of what's going on. I felt like it was time to step up and really just accept who I am.

"There are so many other people that are going through the same thing," he continues. "Or it might not be Marfan syndrome, it might be something worse like cystic fibrosis, or cancer. My mom also suffered from Marfan's, and I lost her at a hospital, because the doctors there didn't know what Marfan syndrome was. She was only 38, and things might be a lot different today if they had known more about it. So I think it's kind of my responsibility to share my story; I think bringing some awareness to something like that is important."

Carlile also wants to make people aware of the frustrating state of U.S. healthcare, something he's had plenty of first-hand experience dealing with. "Our song 'The Lie' is about how terrible our healthcare system is," he explains. "It's about how the 'one percent' in this country has the money, the power and the ability to help so many people, but they use their power negatively. It disgusts me how people that have money and power think they can treat people who don't. It's not right, and it's not fair, and people need to wake up to that—just like they need to wake up to how the pharmaceutical industry is shoving prescriptions down people's throats."

For nearly a decade, Carlile tried to manage his physical pain with multiple daily doses of OxyContin, a highly addictive narcotic that's often prescribed to chronic pain sufferers. But this past January, deciding that he wanted to make 'Cold World' with "a clear head and a clear heart," Carlile stopped taking the drug, and promptly opened the door to a personal hell...

For the rest of the story, pick up the October/November issue.

motorheadroadcrewbeer_638.jpg

Motörhead, Camerons Brewery and Global Merchandising Services have all partnered up to bring you 'Road Crew,' the brand new beer from the iconic rock band. The American-style pale ale will have a 4.5% ABV and will available in keg, cask and bottle.

Drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell were both integral to the development of the ale.

"I'm proud to have been able to develop this beer with Camerons. The trials we have tasted have been great. We wanted this to be an exciting and refreshing brew which is for you, our Road Crew," Mikkey said.

"It has been great fun working with the guys from Camerons on this beer. This is going to be an excellent beer for all Motörhead and rock fans around the world to enjoy," added Phil.

Camerons chief executive Chris Soley said: "We are delighted to work with the guys from Motörhead to create a collaboration beer from scratch. We've spent a lot of time working together to brew something innovative and sampled a wide range of different styles to ensure we did justice to the Motörhead name. Our primary objective was to create a fantastic tasting beer underpinned by the Motörhead branding. Although still in the trial phases of the Road Crew beer, we're confident that what we've started so far will achieve this. It's a fantastic partnership for Camerons Brewery and complements our growing Head of Steam pub brand, which we're looking to expand to further cities across the U.K."

This is not the band's first foray into branding alcoholic beverages. Motörhead has previously released 'Motörhead-Shiraz' wine as well as a signature 'Bastards Lager.'

'Road Crew' is expected to be launched later this year. Camerons will be celebrating the launch of the beer in a North East and also a London location later this year.
