Ariana Grande was the musical guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" last night (May 1st). Before taking the stage to perform her new song "No Tears Left to Cry," the pop singer played a game of "Musical Genre Challenge" with Fallon and the Roots, where she showcased her dark side.
Upon being tasked with performing a "goth rock" reinterpretation of Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE.," Grande was clearly up for the challenge — that is, once she got a few clarifying questions out of the way. ("Goth rock like ... 2003 Evanescence goth rock?" asked Grande, "Like, Hot Topic–shopping goth?") She proceeded to deliver the rap hit in Amy Lee's brooding alto, placing a heavy emphasis on the majestic melismas Lee is known for.
Evanescence released their latest album, Synthesis, last November. Amy Lee and Co. are gearing up to hit the road for a headlining North American tour in July, for which they'll be accompanied by a full orchestra. The trek kicks of July 6th in Kansas City, Missouri, with dates scheduled through early September. Find a full itinerary here.
