DEFTONES' Chino Moreno picks best CROSSES song for introducing new fans

"It encompasses what the project consists of — beat-wise, tempo-wise"

Crosses' catalog thus far is pretty small, but that doesn't mean it's easy to penetrate. The electronic-rock project of Deftones' Chino Moreno and Far's Shaun Lopez emerged in the early 2010s with a fully formed sound that snakes between synth-pop, darkwave and industrial — a similar emotional and aesthetic palette to Deftones, but not nearly as heavy. They dropped a few EPs and a 2014 full-length, and then dropped off the map for eight years, suddenly resurfacing in 2022 with a couple singles and a stellar new EP, PERMANENT.RADIANT.

Therefore, someone who's never heard Crosses before would be looking at a band with two distinct eras and a significant gap in their release schedule; it's not at all obvious where a new listener should dive in if they'd like to give Crosses a proper listen.

For them, Revolver is here to help with our "Point of Entry" series, in which we ask artists to pick the single standout cut from across their entire catalog that they believe is the best place for virgin listeners to begin their journey. Here, Moreno does the honors.

"Vivien"

I think there's a reason why we chose that song as the first single [to introduce us] coming back, pretty much. I know we had the [early 2022] "Initiation/Protection" single that kind of came out under the radar. But I just feel like ["Vivien"] encompasses, in the easiest terms, what the project consists of — beat-wise, tempo-wise.

It kind of depends who I'm playing it for. I feel like Crosses lends itself to catering to different people who are in different moods. There're some pretty sullen tracks, there're some more aggressive tracks, more romantic tracks. So it kind of depends on what mood I'm trying to convey.
