King Woman have shared a massive, haunting reinterpretation of the Stone Roses' classic song "I Wanna Be Adored." Driven by a standout performance from frontwoman Kristina Esfandiari, the powerful cover — which marks the first time the Bay Area doomgazers have taken on a song by another artist — reunites the band with Pat Hills, with whom they recorded their debut EP, 2015's Doubt. It follows last year's excellent album Created in the Image of Suffering, which was featured on our list of the best albums of 2017.
That the crushing King Woman chose a non-metal song as their inaugural cover comes as no surprise: Esfandiari championed the band's refusal to adhere to genre norms in an interview with Revolver last year. "It's not metal," she said of her band's sound. "but I think people get uncomfortable when they can't label you. It's expressive, emotional music. And anybody can relate to that, you know? I want to have a positive message and empower other people through the way I live and the way I perform."
