Spiritbox have finally announced that their long-awaited debut album, Eternal Blue, will arrive this September via Rise Records. In addition to detailing the record, the Vancouver-based trio — made up of former Iwrestledabearonce singer Courtney LaPlante and guitarist Mike Stringer, as well as bassist Bill Crook — have also dropped a new single from it called "Secret Garden."
Between their 2017 EP and the many cuts they've dripped out since, Spiritbox's music has run the gamut from brutal deathcore and djenty prog to atmospheric alt-metal. It's impossible to guess where they'll go on a given song, and "Secret Garden" keeps that unpredictability alive by taking their sound in yet another direction. With a hook that features driving power chords and an earworm chorus from LaPlante, this might be Spiritbox's biggest departure from the world of metal, but it doesn't sacrifice an iota of their emotional heft. "I think this is the most scared I've been to put out a song," LaPlante said in a statement. "Because I realize as we continue to release music in single format, listeners can start to assume what kind of band we are, and are alarmed when we do not meet those assumptions."
She continued, "I want to continue to showcase the fluidity that is inherent in heavy music, and even though this is just one part of a full body of work that may not sound exactly like this song, it's a song that we love and are obsessed with. I celebrate variation. 'Secret Garden' is exciting to me, for this reason."
"I'm scared but excited," she added. "Like I'm about to hit the big drop on a roller coaster, and I'm fully embracing that."
