Every Metallica release since the "Black Album" has made a big splash on the Billboard charts, and their new one, 72 Seasons, is no different. The first-week sales numbers for 'Tallica's 11th album are in, and while it didn't go No. 1, it was the highest-charting rock album on the Billboard 200 since TOOL's 2019 LP, Fear Inoculum

According to Billboard, Metallica's first record in seven years earned 146,000 album units during its first week in the world, which is the most any rock or hard-rock album has sold during its first week since the long-awaited Fear Inoculum, which racked up 270,000 equivalent album units and went to No. 1 on the 200 chart. 72 Seasons peaked at No. 2, failing to beat out the latest release from controversial country star Morgan Wallen, which has reigned at No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks.

Even so, the album's numbers are a big deal in a modern landscape where rock music rarely dominates the commercial zeitgeist. However, 72 Seasons is also the first Metallica record since 1988's ...And Justice for All that didn't debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
