New masks, new drummer, old songs: See SLIPKNOT's intimate first show of 2024

Iowa Nine kicked off new era at tiny venue in California desert

Holy. Fucking. Shit. Slipknot just played a buckwild intimate show at a 850-capacity venue last night (April 25th) in the California desert.

After teasing the "One Night Only" event last week, the Iowa Nine slyly announced the gig a few days ago, which went down at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown, CA. Tickets were only $9 and all the proceeds went to a couple charities, the Joshua Tree No Kill Shelter and BOYS & GIRLS CLUB of the Hi Desert.

The show marked Slipknot's first performance of 2024, and also their first with their not-so-mysterious new drummer, who replaced Jay Weinberg after his departure from the band last November.

Despite the new blood, the performance looked like an old-school Slipknot show from the self-titled era. The band rocked the red jumpsuits that were their trademark in the late Nineties, and the band debuted new masks that looked a helluva lot like the ones they donned back in '99.

"Tonight, it doesn't matter you came from. It doesn't matter when you were born," frontman Corey Taylor said onstage at one point.

"This year is 19 fucking' 99, right here. We're gonna play you some songs from beyond that year. But Goddammit, it all started in '99, and it is starting again here tonight."

Fittingly, the setlist was packed with oldies from that period. They mostly played songs off of Slipknot and Iowa, including the self-titled gem "Prosthetics," which they hadn't pulled out live since 2019.

The usual suspects from Vol. 3, All Hope Is Gone and the Gray Chapter were in the setlist as well, but interestingly, they didn't play a single song from 2022's THE END, SO FAR.

Tomorrow (April 26th), Slipknot will headline Sick New World fest in Las Vegas, which was originally slated to be their first show of the year. Stay tuned for whatever surprises they might pull out at that show.
