Scars on Broadway reinvented industrial pioneers' "Assimilate" as propulsive guitar-heavy anthem

In 2008, System of a Down guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Daron Malakian released the first album from his solo project Scars on Broadway; he sang and played every instrument on the self-titled record, other than drums, which were handled by his SOAD bandmate John Dolmayan. The band shortly thereafter went on hiatus, finally resurfacing in 2010 with shows in Los Angeles and a new song, "Fucking."

Scars on Broadway also rolled out a stellar cover of one of Malakian's less obvious influences, Canadian industrial mavens Skinny Puppy, that year. On August 20th, at a sold-out show at the Avalon in Hollywood, the group ripped out a churning, guitar-heavy reimagining of the 1985 EBM dance-floor stomper "Assimilate," with Dolmayan on drums and SOAD's Shavo Odadjian rocking out with a drinkin hand. It's a great spin on the industrial classic, and one that puts Malakian's weirdo-rock inclinations into a new perspective. Watch above.
