In early October, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's daughter Willow released her new album, Coping Mechanism, which leans into the gothy pop-punk of its predecessor, 2021's Lately I Feel Everything. But it also features some heavier, more metallic influences, culling from bands like Lamb of God, Primus and Crowbar for which Willow has proclaimed her fandom.
Count among those groups alt-metal heroes Deftones. At a recent show, the 22-year-old Smith — whose mother fronted early Aughts Ozzfest veterans Wicked Wisdom — even broke out the riff to the band's Around the Fur classic "My Own Summer (Shove It)" in tribute to Sacramento's favorite sons.
