Lars Ulrich's father Torben Ulrich, known by Metallica fans for his eccentric appearance in 2004's Some Kind of Monster documentary, has died. He was 95 years old.

His son shared the heartbreaking news in a brief yet touching memoriam on social media, which nodded to many of Torben's multi-faceted accomplishments. He was a star tennis player, a prolific writer, a musician, composer and even a filmmaker.

"95 years of adventures, unique experiences, curiosity, pushing boundaries, challenging the status quo, tennis, music, art, writing ... and quite a bit of Danish contrarian attitude," Lars wrote on Instagram. "Thank you endlessly! I love you dad."

While Torben was certainly an accomplished multi-hyphenate in his own right, Metallica fans are most familiar with his hair-raisingly awkward appearance in Some Kind of Monster, where he coldly tells his son to "delete" a St. Anger track he doesn't approve of.
