As we suspected, Metallica's latest series of TikTok duet videos were leading up to the announcement of a new song. Tomorrow (March 1st), the thrash pioneers will unveil "If Darkness Had a Son," another single from their upcoming album 72 Seasons (due out April 14th). Below, you can watch the band play a solid minute-and-20-second chunk of the track in a new TikTok vid.
The band have making full use of their newfound TikTok fame. In a recent string of videos on the Gen-Z-dominated app (where the band went viral last year thanks to "Master of Puppets" appearing in Stranger Things), the heavy-metal titans had fun playing with TikTok's duet function to tease out instrumental portions of the new tune.
Over the weekend, the band's official TikTok profile posted a video of drummer Lars Ulrich laying down a beat with the caption "duet this." The next day, bassist Rob Trujillo followed orders and laid down a bassline on the other half of the screen. Yesterday, singer-guitarist James Hetfield added a nasty riff to his bandmates' rhythm section, and today (February 28th), guitarist Kirk Hammett hopped in with some shreddy lead-work.
There're no vocals in the preview, but if the instrumentation on "If Darkness Had a Son" is any indication, then this might be the best single Metallica will have dropped from 72 Seasons' 12-song tracklist. Check in tomorrow to hear the full thing.
