In recent years, Albany, New York, label Magnetic Eye Records have built up an impressive run of covers compilations. For their Redux series, the label have released full-album remakes of classics like Alice in Chains' Dirt and Black Sabbath's Vol. 4, where they enlist different artists from the worlds of sludge, doom, stoner-metal and more to put their spin on each song.
Later this summer, they'll be dropping a Redux of Soundgarden's 1994 grunge epic, Superunknown, and today (June 5th), we're proud to be premiering Frayle's eerie, crushing version of "Head Down."
We at Revolver HQ are longtime supporters of the Cleveland occult-doom band — led by enigmatic singer Gwyn Strang — so hearing them take on the trippy, trudging Superunknown album cut is a real treat.
The song also comes paired with one of Frayle's signature spooky music videos, so watch and listen above via YouTube.
"Soundgarden was an integral part of our development as musicians from an early age," Frayle tell us. "'Fell on Black Days,' 'Black Hole Sun,' the list just goes on and on. For 'Head Down,' we deconstructed the song and switched the timing to 4/4.
"The song as recorded by Soundgarden has overlapping drum parts, complicated timing, etc. We wanted to strip it down and give it elements of tribal drumming while at the same time adding layers of vocal harmonies and voices coming at the listener from all angles."
