Two years have passed since the release of their breakout record The Demonstration and in that time, Los Angeles post-punk duo Drab Majesty have gone from relatively unknown weirdos in strange costumes who perform in a cloud of smoke to opening shows for the likes of black-metal shoegazers Deafheaven and Nineties alt-rock stalwarts Smashing Pumpkins. Today they're back with their latest single "Ellipsis," taken from their coming full-length Modern Mirror.
Driven by krautrock-inspired drum patterns and weightless, swirling synth lines, the song is both a perfect nod to its Eighties New Wave forefathers and timelessly infectious, perfect for moving a chilled-out dance floor. In keeping with their immersive commitment to the performance, the video follows a similar aesthetic path: VCR-style grainy, neon footage shows a simple figure continuously running as distorted clips of singer Deb Demure are strewn throughout showing off the androgynous, Warhol-esque costuming, a crucial bit of the performance art aspect of the band.
Drab Majesty's forthcoming record will be a re-telling of the story of Narcissus as interpreted through a modern lens and accounting for the rapid shift in modern sensibility as spurred on by technology and our inability to escape it. Modern Mirror arrives July 12th via Dais Records. Find pre-order bundles here. Find the band on tour on their current tour at one of the dates below.
