Halford_MK1_1.jpg

When news broke out that legendary Judas Priest singer Rob Halford would be opening for Ozzy Osbourne on the North American leg of the Prince of Darkness' Scream world tour, expectations were high—and rightfully so. Both legends have new albums out—Halford IV: Made of Metal and the aforementioned Scream—and on this brisk December night in New York City at the historic Madison Square Garden, metal fans spanning four generations got the chance to see the genre's founding fathers deliver the goods.

Though I've seen Judas Priest a few times, this was my first time seeing Rob Halford's solo band live. I'm not too familiar with his eponymous project but I figured this would be the best time to catch it since Judas Priest is calling it quits soon [read about it here]. The band—which also includes drummer extraordinaire Bobby Jarzombek, bassist Mike Davis and guitarists "Metal" Mike Chlasciak and Roy Z. Ramirez—opened with "Resurrection" and wasted no time with "Made in Hell," "Locked and Loaded" and the new single, "Made of Metal." Halford delivered additional cuts from Halford IV: Made of Metal, including "Fire and Ice" and "Thunder and Lightning." While Halford's recent material surely got the early crowd going, it wasn't until he pulled out the cover songs made famous by his main band—Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Pronged Crown)" and Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust"—that really got the electricity going. The only Priest song that was played was "Jawbreaker"—a track that hasn't been performed live in many years. The band closed the nearly hour-long set with "Cyberworld."

It was evident to me that Rob Halford was really enjoying himself onstage with his solo band. The in-between stage banter was kept to a bare minimum and Halford was actively moving around the stage and engaging with the audience. There was an energy there that I felt was missing when I saw Priest a few years ago, and it was nice to see the Metal God finding his spark again. Though his voice may not sound like it used to, seeing a legend like Halford still kicking ass 40 years later is not to be missed. —Henry Yuan

It was a cold October night in Hamburg, Germany…the perfect vibe for a live Watain ritual.

With the incense burning, the onstage altar lit with a row of candles and blood all over the floor, the feeling of total death lingered in the air. Once the band came out, they ripped right into "Malfeitor" before going into "The Devil's Blood" and "Satan's Hunger." Throughout the hour-or-so set, talking was kept to a bare minimum, as most of the songs were fairly long (most hitting past the seven-minute mark). Cuts from the band's latest record, Lawless Darkness, and 2007's Sworn to the Dark comprised almost all of the music played. "Waters of Ain," the epic 14-minute closing track off Lawless, ended the show and seeing it live took me to realms I didn't knew existed. I totally worship the band's recent outings so this show was a real treat for me.

Though I've seen this Swedish black metal five-piece—guitarist P., drummer H., vocalist E. and live members A. on bass and Set Teitan on second guitar—numerous times before, experiencing their menacing live actions never gets old.

But seeing Watain in Europe—with the band's complete stage show—was a particularly special treat for me. The band has never played in North America with their official live line-up, and they create such an incredible backdrop for the already captivating frontman, E.

Whether it's in America or Europe, Watain delivers the goods live. The band's playing is tight as hell and delivered with conviction. Black metal is all about the feeling and the atmosphere and Watain embody this. When you see Watain, you see five men onstage possessed by the Devil Himself. But don't take my word for it. The band just hit U.S. shores, so go see for yourself (Set Teitan was denied entrance to America, so The Devil's Blood's SL is filling in for him). With Watain, seeing is believing. —Henry Yuan

I have to be honest: tonight was my first time seeing Death Angel. The highly underrated and often-overlooked Bay Area thrashers have been very active since their reformation in 2001 and have passed through the New York metro area a decent amount of times in support of their 2004 comeback record, The Art of Dying, and 2008's Killing Season. Yet, I still blew it time and time again. This time there weren't gonna be no excuses: I had to see these guys.

And goddamn if I wasn't glad I did.

Founding vocalist Mark Osegueda and guitarist Rob Cavestany [Watch our video interview HERE], along with guitarist Ted Aguilar and newly recruited bassist Damien Sisson and drummer Will Carroll (who also play in Ulysses Siren and Warning S.F.), stormed the stage like bats out of hell, opening with "Lord of Hate" into "Buried Alive." While I wasn't too familiar with these newer cuts, the packed crowd still thrashed like it was the mid-Eighties and knew the songs as if they were old classics.

And when the guys did get around to playing classics such as "Third Floor," "Seemingly Endless Time" and the excellent "Kill As One," the very appreciative audience went wild. The band was clearly in high spirits, too, especially Osegueda, who was all smiles and thanked the crowd every chance he got.

Throughout the cult legends' set, I couldn't help but notice Cavestany's constant technical issues with his guitar/amp. Despite this, he soldiered on without missing a note and ripped his leads with the same passion he had 20-plus years ago. The rest of the band played with point-blank accuracy, especially Will Carroll, who is definitely a worthy replacement for original skinsman Andy Galeon.

Unfortunately, because they were opening for Soilwork, Death Angel was stuck playing a short set. But they made the most of it, and concluded with a taste from their upcoming album, Relentless Revolution, which is due out September 14 through Nuclear Blast. I have to say – it sounded promising and worked very well live.

Death Angel isn't a warm-up band and their appearance at the Gramercy proves it…the crowd definitely wanted more. But I was stoked to finally have the chance to see this excellent band live, and I can't wait for their return! —Henry Yuan

The track "Bonnie The Cat" is taken from the Grammy-nominated band's current album The Incident (Roadrunner) and is one of the stand-alone tracks from disc two of the double-disc album. Disc one features the 55-minute musical statement that is the title track, made up of 14 individually titled, diverse, yet interlinked vignettes. The video is directed by Polish director Przemyslaw Vshebor.

The band is currently on tour in Europe and will kick off its U.S. tour in San Francisco on August 11.
